Common Conditions and Patient Information
Kneecap( PatelloFemoral) Instability
What is Patello-Femoral Instability? Patello-femoral instability refers to a condition where the patella (kneecap) moves out of its normal position in the groove of the femur (thigh bone). This misalignment can cause the patella to dislocate or sublux (partially dislocate). This instability can result in pain, swelling, and difficulty moving the knee, and it may affect daily activities like walking, climbing stairs, or even sitting for long periods.
Anterior Crcuiate Ligament (ACL) Injury
What is an ACL Injury? The anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is one of the key ligaments in the knee that helps stabilize the joint by controlling forward movement and rotation of the shin bone (tibia) in relation to the thigh bone (femur). An ACL injury occurs when this ligament is stretched, partially torn, or completely ruptured, often during physical activities that involve sudden movements, jumping, or changes in direction. ACL injuries are common in athletes, particularly those involved in sports such as football, basketball, skiing, rugby and netball. However, they can happen to anyone during everyday activities.
Knee Arthroscopy
What is Knee Arthroscopy? Knee arthroscopy is a minimally invasive surgical procedure used to diagnose and treat problems inside the knee joint. During the procedure, a small camera (arthroscope) is inserted into the knee through a tiny incision, allowing the surgeon to view the inside of the joint on a monitor. This technique uses small incisions, which results in less tissue damage, a quicker recovery time, and less scarring compared to traditional open surgery.
Meniscal Repair
What is the meniscus? The meniscus is a C-shaped piece of cartilage in your knee. Each knee has two menisci (inner and outer). They act as shock absorbers, protect the joint surfaces, and help keep your knee stable.
MPFL Reconstruction
What is the MPFL? The medial patellofemoral ligament (MPFL) is a strong band of tissue on the inside of your knee. It helps keep the kneecap (patella) in the correct position and stops it from sliding outwards.
Trochleoplasty
What is the trochlea? The trochlea is the groove at the end of the thigh bone (femur) where the kneecap (patella) sits and moves when you bend or straighten your leg.
Curly Toe Surgery
What is a curly toe? A curly toe is a common condition, usually affecting the little toes. The toe bends downwards and twists under the next toe. It often runs in families and is usually noticed in childhood.
Paediatric Trigger Thumb
What is trigger thumb? Trigger thumb is a condition where a child’s thumb gets stuck in a bent position and may “click” or “lock” when straightened.
Ingrowing Toenails
What is an ingrowing toenail? An ingrowing toenail happens when the edge of the toenail grows into the surrounding skin. This causes pain, redness, swelling, and sometimes infection. It usually affects the big toe, but can happen to any toe.
Clubfoot (Talipes Foot)
Clubfoot is a condition where a baby is born with one or both feet turned inwards and downwards. The foot may look twisted, and it can be difficult to place the sole flat on the ground.
Developmental Dysplasia of the Hip
Hip dysplasia (also called developmental dysplasia of the hip, or DDH) is a condition where a baby’s hip joint has not developed properly.
Limb Alignment issues - Knocked Knees/Bow Legs
What are knock knees and bow legs? These are common conditions affecting the alignment of a child’s legs as they grow. •Bow legs (genu varum): the legs curve outwards, so the knees stay apart when the feet are together. •Knock knees (genu valgum): the knees angle inwards and touch, while the ankles stay apart.

Fracture and Traumatic Injuries to the Arms or Legs
What is a fracture? Any fall or traumatic injury that can lead to a broken bone can be deemed to be a fracture. The management of fractures in children's bones are variable dependent on the location of the break and age of the child. Book a consultations today for bespoke advice on the injury today.
